(not my photo)

pittsburghese!

(disclaimer: this is not to make fun of anyone, rather this is a celebration of the ancient art of living in southwestern pennsylvania)

in the last week, things that have either been said to me, around me, or that i have found myself saying:

“don’ go nowhere” < -- “hold on”

“joo miss me?” < - - “did you miss me?”

“where she live” shortened from, “where’s she live” < - - “where does she live?” (note: question mark left out for a reason, because this, being pittsburghese, did not have rising intonation like what jagoff midwesterners would consider a "question")

"my clothes need washed" < - - "my clothes need to be washed"

“mucking stalls” < - - “cleaning horse stalls"

“yinz have a good one” < - - “you all have a good day”

“all ‘e does is drink anymore” < - - “nowadays, all he does is drink”

"it sucks anymore!" < - - ""it used to be okay, but now it just sucks!"

"Hines won dancing with the stars" < - - same.

  3. note to all: i've also concluded that when using "do/did," etc. "j" indicates past tense (do + you = joo), while present tense requires no extra verb.

example: "joo see that?" v. "you see that?"
the difference between "did you see that?" and "do you see that?" respectively. haha

    p.s. "can" + "i" = "k'i"
and "can" + "you" = "kyu"

p.p.s. the "ow" sound is often more like "ah"
and people from around pittsburgh, if you don't think you do this, think about how you say "our" in your normal speech, it's probably not "owr," and more like a pirate noise haha.
